A lot of peoples’ first job experiences happen in high school, whether they start out working in fast food, as camp counselors, or in retail for a little extra cash, or for early experience.

It becomes desirable for college students to work internships in their chosen career path. Students also tend to work summer jobs for pocket money, and some work throughout their semesters in jobs similar to those they worked in high school, as they might be paying their own way through college.

What college students can look forward to after graduation, however, is working at a job that offers benefits, meaning different types of non-wage related perks of being an employee at a certain company, business or organization.

These jobs would be considered full-time jobs, or careers. Here is a list of possible benefits offered to full-time employees that you should know about:

1. Health insurance

One benefit offered to those working as full-time employees at certain businesses, companies, or organizations is health insurance. What this generally means is that your employer can offer you, an employee of theirs, a program that helps financially cover medical expenses, whether through privately purchased insurance, or other programs funded by the government.

This type of insurance, as opposed to auto, or life insurance, is used to provide protection against the otherwise high costs of medical services and treatment. Health care coverage can either come in the form of private, or governmental coverage.

2. Retirement benefits

Another benefit offered to certain full-time employees is a pension, which is basically a fixed amount of money that is paid to the employee following their retirement.

Pensions can be set up by employers, insurance companies, trade unions, labor unions, or the government, but ones offered by employers solely for the benefit of their employees are usually referred to as occupational or employer pensions.

Some pensions even include additional insurance compensation, since they often pay benefits to survivors of long-term illness, or people who are disabled.

Another type of retirement benefit often available to full-time employees is a 401 (k). Under these plans, employers offer retirement savings contributions, which are deducted from the employee’s paycheck before taxes are taken out. The contributions are therefore shielded from taxation until they are withdrawn after retirement.

3. Sick Leave

Sick leave, also commonly referred to as “paid sick days” or “sick pay” is pretty self-explanatory. It is an employment benefit offered to full-time employees, which includes allowing the employee to take off a certain amount of time to address health and safety needs, while still being paid as if they were working.

Some company policies even allow paid sick time to be used to care for sick family members, to attend normal doctor or medical appointments, or to address health needs related to sexual assault, or domestic violence.

4. Annual leave (vacation time)

Similar to sick leave, annual leave is paid time off of work, by employers, to employees, every year. This time is often used for vacation purposes, or for whatever the employee wishes.

The amount of days offered each year to the employee differs among various companies, or businesses, and employees are often expected or required to give an appropriate amount of advanced notice to their employers of their chosen time off, for coordination and logistical purposes.

5. Employee discount programs

Full-time job benefits can also include formal or informal employee discount programs that grant employers access to certain amenities to which they otherwise would not have access as ordinary people.

These features can include movies and theme park tickets, discounted shopping, wellness programs, and discounted hotels and resorts.

Amenities like these are offered to employees to increase satisfaction and loyalty to the company, and to attract potential new employees.

6. Housing, auto and technological perks

Oftentimes, employers will offer their employees even more personal perks, like a company car, cell phone, or housing paid for by the employer.

While still technically belonging to the employer, having the ability to drive a certain car you wouldn’t otherwise choose to drive, or having the ability to utilize new technology you never thought you would have the use for can be exciting, and therefore attractive to a full-time employee.

Working at McDonald’s in high school, or working at the library in college are great first-time job experiences that offer insight into what it’s like to be on your own in the real world, being responsible for yourself, dealing with all types of people and working toward goals.

However, it is important to be aware of what there is to expect and attain as a full-time employee of a company, organization, or business.

The perks and benefits that come along with having a full-time job or career are exciting, and can also serve as reasoning behind choosing a certain job, or working at a certain location.
