How To: Spice Up Your Subway Sandwich! By A Former Sandwich Artist

By Casey Balch on June 21, 2013

Now, not many of you may know this about me but I used to be an artist: A Sandwich Artist.

I took and still take pride in my sandwich making abilities and this is not open for debate or a “make me a sandwich” joke.  Those are lame and uncreative and need to go away.

I worked at a local Subway for about half of a year and every day I worked, I was at liberty to have a free sub. And believe me, when something is free, I take full advantage of the system.

With having abused the system and watching how others chose their ingredients, I learned a thing or two.  So, without further adieu I present to you how to spice up your Subway sandwich/sub/hoagie/whateveryouwanttocallit (But it is Subway, so I call it a sub)  (At Wawa, it is a hoagie though).

We will start off with the most basic sandwiches:

Veggie Delite & Veggie Patty

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

You might as well upgrade to the Veggie Patty.  This current option is salad on bread.  Pay the extra dollar or two and get the Patty.  It’s delicious.  It looks weird, but trust me it’s delicious.  Choose any cheese you like, but for this kind of sandwich I prefer American for the Delite or Monterrey Cheddar for the Patty.

The options on either, is abuse the system.  Don’t toast the bread either.  Get all the vegetables.  When you toast the bread, you become more susceptible to having your sandwich collapsing and creating a regular salad.

After ordering everything on it (I sometimes skip the green peppers), you’re going to want to get a dressing.

If you get the Delight, you should go with a basic sauce like the Ranch or the Vinaigrette.  Not the Oil&Vinegar, the Vinaigrette.

If you do what I told you to do and get the Patty, the best sauce it the Chipotle Southwest.  It gives a spice to your sandwich and enhances the flavors of the Veggie Patty.

Next up: The Meats

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

Whether you get Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, or any combination of the three: ALWAYS GET THE BACON.

When you get Ham and Turkey with Bacon, it becomes the Subway Melt.  Just do it.  It’s one of my favorites.

When you get Ham, Turkey, and Roast Beef, it becomes the Subway Club.

Either of these is a toss up on vegetables and sauce, depending on your mood.

If you want a classic experience: get lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and Honey Mustard.

If you want to kick up some excitement: get the classic ingredients and add some Sweet and Banana Peppers.  The pops of sweet and spice add to your dining experience that you would have never known you were missing.  As for sauce, get some Chipotle Southwest and add a line of Hot Sauce.  Live a little.

The Oven Roasted Chicken

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

The Oven Roasted Chicken can be dressed up a number of ways.

You can make it into a Chicken Parm Sub if you sweetly ask your sandwich artist to steal some of the marinara sauce from the meatballs.  If they’re in a good mood and you’re nice enough, they’ll help you out.  Slap some Provolone cheese on it and get it toasted add some grated Parmesan.  There you go.

If you want a more traditional route, have the chicken toasted and leave the bread out of the oven.  Add Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and either Honey Mustard or Chipotle Southwest.  I shy away from Pickles when it comes to the warmer subs, but you can opt in if you prefer.

I prefer to always have extra pickles on the side.

The Sweet Onion Chicken Teryaki

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

With this one, you have two options: Toasted Bread or Not Toasted Bread.

Toasted:

With the chicken, opt in for Sweet Onion added onto the chicken before toasting. Also add Onions, Banana Peppers and Sweet Peppers before you have it toasted.  Trust me.

After you have it toasted, feel free to add your Lettuce and Tomato.

Not Toasted:

With the chicken, add the veggies and sauce with your chicken while your bread sits out on this dance.

When the gang gets out of the oven, your bread will soak up the juices in a wonderful way.

This is my preferred method of sandwich madness and you will not be disappointed.

The Buffalo Chicken

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

With this one, you have the same two options: Toasted Bread or Not Toasted Bread.

Toasted:

With the chicken, opt in for some extra Buffalo Sauce added onto the chicken before toasting. Also add Onions, Banana Peppers and Sweet Peppers before you have it toasted.  Trust me.

After you have it toasted, feel free to add your Lettuce and Tomato.

Not Toasted:

With the chicken, add the veggies and sauce with your chicken while your bread sits out again on this dance.

When the party gets out of the oven, your bread will soak up the juices in a wonderful way.

This is ALWAYS my preferred method of sandwich madness because I love my sauces and my bread.

The Chicken Bacon Ranch

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

With the Chicken Bacon Ranch, you have the same toasting options as with the Buffalo and Teryaki.

The only necessity you should add onto this sub is the Chipotle Southwest and Monterrey Cheddar.  These flavor enhancers compliment the bacon the only way any sauce and cheese could know how.

The Meatball

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

This is the wrong way to do this.  They are doing it wrong.

This is my favorite sandwich to have on a rainy day.  Here is how you do the Meatball Marinara CORRECTLY:

Toast your bread and meatballs LIGHTLY with Monterrey Cheddar, Onions, Sweet Peppers, Banana Peppers and a line of Chipotle Southwest sauce.

***If you are a fan of black olives, I recommend you add them as well before toasting.

Once out of the oven, add some Oregano and grated Parmesan.

PERFECTION EVERY TIME.

The Spicy Italian

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

This sandwich is best not toasted.

After the meat, add Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Sweet Peppers, Banana Peppers, Black Olives, and Pickles.

Add a line of Honey Mustard and if you’re feeling saucy: add a line of Chipotle Southwest.

The Italian BMT

https://caseywasthere.files.wordpress.com

Same instructions as the Spicy Italian!

And there you have it!  Subway is best when it is done right.  The only way you’ll learn how to make sandwiches this great is from a master if the Art of Sandwich Making.

Which I forever am.

A Sandwich Artist.
